More than a Baby Shower
The HopeLine Celebrates and Supports New Moms in the Bronx

More than 30 expecting and new mothers gathered at The HopeLine on June 5 for a special Community Baby Shower designed to provide practical support, valuable resources, and encouragement during one of life’s most important transitions.
Hosted by The HopeLine in partnership with United Way of New York City, the event welcomed families from across the Bronx for a day focused on maternal health, infant care, and community connection.
Throughout the event, families received essential baby supplies including diapers, baby wipes, formula, car seats, diaper bags, baby bathtubs, baby wraps, hygiene products, and postpartum care items. In total, The HopeLine distributed approximately 2,600 diapers to participating families.
Several community organizations were on hand to provide information, health services, and support. Representatives from United Way of New York City, Somos Community Care, WIC, and Ancient Song joined the event, helping families connect with healthcare resources, nutrition assistance programs, and pregnancy and childbirth support services.
“Every family deserves to welcome a child into the world with dignity, confidence, and support,” said Maria Cintron, Executive Director of The HopeLine. “This event reminds parents that they are not alone and that an entire community is standing beside them.”
Participants also had opportunities to win larger baby essentials through raffles, including strollers, play mats, and other items designed to help families prepare for their growing households.
One especially meaningful moment came when a first-time father attended on behalf of his wife, who had recently given birth. After collecting supplies and resources for his family, he headed directly to the hospital to assist with his wife’s discharge and bring their newborn home.
“Seeing parents arrive with hope, excitement, and sometimes uncertainty reminds us why this work matters,” said Veronica Torres, Senior Director of Health Equity at United Way of New York City. “These partnerships help ensure families have the support they need from day one.”
The event also marked the expansion of a transportation partnership that helped remove a common barrier faced by many families. Through a program supported by United Way of New York City, approximately 80 percent of participating families received complimentary Lyft rides home, allowing them to safely transport diapers, supplies, and larger baby items.
“Transportation can often be an overlooked challenge for families accessing services,” said Cintron. “We provided rides for several moms to help them get home safely with the items they need, we’re making support more accessible and more meaningful.”
Ancient Song, a nationally recognized birth justice organization serving low-income Black and Latinx families, was also present to connect parents with advocacy, education, and maternal health resources.
The Community Baby Shower reflects The HopeLine’s broader commitment to helping families facing poverty, food insecurity, and economic hardship throughout New York City. As one of the city’s leading diaper distribution programs, The HopeLine continues to provide critical resources that help parents care for their children while reducing financial stress during the earliest stages of family life.
